Pennsylvania Boat Registration: Everything You Need to Know Before Hitting the Water

Before you launch your boat on Pennsylvania's waterways, make sure it's properly registered. Here's everything you need to know about PA boat registration requirements, fees, and the process.

Do You Need to Register Your Boat in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania law requires registration for virtually all motorized watercraft operated on PA waters. With the Delaware River running along the eastern edge of Bucks County right through Bristol, Burlington, and Croydon, boating is a popular activity for local residents. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) administers all watercraft registration in the state.

Boat registration serves several important purposes: it helps authorities identify vessels in emergencies, ensures boats meet safety standards, and provides funding for waterway maintenance and conservation efforts.

Which Boats Must Be Registered?

All motorized watercraft operated on Pennsylvania waters must be registered, regardless of size. This includes fishing boats, pontoons, personal watercraft (jet skis), and sailboats with auxiliary motors. Non-motorized boats must be registered if they are 16 feet or longer. Review the complete PFBC registration requirements for exemptions and special cases.

Documents Needed for Boat Registration

To register your boat in Pennsylvania, you will need:

  • Proof of ownership (manufacturer's statement of origin for new boats, or properly assigned title for used boats)
  • A completed PFBC registration application
  • Proof of identity
  • Payment for registration fees and taxes

Pennsylvania Boat Registration Fees

Registration fees are based on the length of the vessel. As of 2026, fees range from approximately $22 for boats under 16 feet to $65 for boats 40 feet and over. Personal watercraft (jet skis) have a flat fee of $22. Registrations are valid for two years. See the full PFBC fee schedule for current rates.

Boat Insurance: Is It Required?

Pennsylvania does not require boat insurance by law, but it is strongly recommended. Many marinas and boat storage facilities require proof of insurance. The BoatUS Foundation offers excellent resources on choosing the right marine coverage. At Jordan's Auto Tags, we can help you find affordable boat insurance through our carrier network.
